All You Need to Know About Magnetic Charging

With the launch of the iPhone 12 and MagSafe chargers in 2020, magnetic charging technology has gained momentum in wireless charging within the electronics industry. Plus, it has even challenged the Qi charging standard with its faster and more convenient wireless charging experience. However, what is magnetic charging? What benefits does it have? Is magnetic charging bad for my phone? More questions about it are raised. Today, we will debunk the myths about magnetic charging.

What is magnetic charging technology?

Magnetic charging technology refers to Magsafe technology. The earliest Magsafe technology can be traced back to the charging system of the MacBook. At that time, Apple used “Magsafe” in the charging cable of the Macbook. This magnetic charging cable has a male magnet and a female magnet on the ends of the charging interface. Once they approach each other, the ends of the port will automatically absorb each other for charging your device, which allows you to use it with one hand without fumbling the charging port while protecting the cable connector from getting damaged by frequent unplugging. More importantly, the charging port will automatically disconnect to prevent the laptop from falling once the cable experiences violent pulling.

However, magnetic charging for iPhone is different from the magnetic charging cable for the Macbook. It is an optimized wireless charging technology based on traditional wireless charging. As we know, traditional wireless charging technology works by using a transmitter coil in a wireless charger and a receiver coil inside a phone. Once these two coils are aligned, an induction effect is formed to transfer electrical energy wirelessly over very short distances between the two devices. However, you may find it hard to align your phone with the charging area, which will cause low-efficiency charging. Worse then, the short distance between a charger and a device while charging will bring high temperatures while affecting the speed due to the bad heat dissipation. Thankfully, magnetic charging was invented to solve this problem.

How does magnetic charging work?

Magnetic charging uses induction charging, which is versatile for the Qi charging standard. Based on traditional wireless charging technology, it adds a magnetic array around the receiver coil inside the phone and the transmitter coil in the charger. Through the magnetic suction effect, the receiver coil can precisely align the transmitter coil automatically, resulting in higher wattage charging than a traditional wireless charger.

Besides, some magnetic wireless chargers and smartphones have a built-in alignment magnet that senses the change of a magnetic field to help these magnetic charging coils automatically snap into perfect alignment.

The benefits of magnetic charging

Magnetic charging offers a convenient and cable-free charging method that can effectively protect the charging ports of the supported devices from damage brought on by frequent unplugging.

Besides, magnetic charging can achieve perfect alignment between coils automatically without fumbling for the charging area while enabling a more efficient transfer of power to achieve a maximum output of 15 W. Thanks to strong magnetic suction, it can firmly affix your phone to the charger, preventing your device from shaking or falling while charging.

Plus, magnetic charging cables can allow you to charge your device effortlessly. Under the magnetic suction effect, the ends of the charging interface will automatically align, which will not distract you from driving to find the charging port.

Does magnetic charging damage my phone?

Despite the many benefits of magnetic charging, there is still a misconception that it will damage a phone and its battery. Some people may mistakenly take it for granted that the magnetic field created while magnetic charging will harm the semiconductor components inside the phone. As a matter of fact, very few modern electronic products will be affected by a weak magnetic field. Not to mention, the magnetic field formed by magnetic charging is not strong enough to hurt your phone.

Then, is magnetic charging bad for the batteries? Absolutely Not. Batteries will start to degrade once they are charged, whether you use cable charging or magnetic charging. And they typically have limited charging cycles. So your phone battery can run longer on a full charge when you first buy it. However, after a year, it may need frequent charging.

Does magnetic charging work through a phone case?

Yes. Magnetic wireless charging can work through any slim silicone or plastic case. However, a thick or poor phone case may make it hard to connect your phone to a wireless charger and even lower the charging speed.

Do you need a magnetic charging phone case?

Not certainly. Magnetic wireless chargers are compatible with many recent smartphones that support wireless charging. However, only the iPhone 12 series and later smartphones that support magnetic charging can work well with a magnetic suction alignment. If your phone does not have a magnetic suction feature but you still want to experience magnetic charging, you can buy a magnetic wireless charging phone case.

Magnetic wireless charging phone cases are designed based on the magnetic wireless charging principle. They use a magnet array and alignment magnet in the back of the phone case, so it enables your phone to precisely match the magnetic charging coil of the magnetic wireless charger for maximum charging speed. As such, if you want a safe, quick, and convenient way to recharge your iPhone 12 (or a newer model), we recommend looking into magnetic charging phone cases. And if you're not concerned about speed or security, it is okay to use a regular phone case.

However, using this kind of phone case is not the only way to enable you to use a magnetic charger. Some magnetic chargers or magnetic charging power banks will offer an iron sheet or alloy sheet that you can stick on the back of phones to achieve magnetic charging.
